Phuguri Tea Estate (BIO-ORGANIC)

Phuguri tea estate spreads over the crest and slopes of the Phalut ridge of mountains that border India and Nepal. Endowed with a quaint celluloid beauty, the town its self is perched at a height of 1768 meters above sea level. It’s unparalleled in beauty spreading up to river MECHI which divides India and Nepal geographically.

It derives its name from back in 1875 a mass of tribal people [tribes Lepcha, Bhutia] from Nepal crossed the Mechi river and attacked locals of Mirik Valley. The invaders made a temporary camp where Phuguri Tea Estate is situated now. Thus locals started calling the place ‘PHUA GORI’ [PHUA meaning ABUNDANT and GORI meaning CAMP]. With time the name became PHUGURI.

Phuguri was gifted to Mr. Dakman Rai by Britishers as a token of appreciation for his contribution to making the old Militaty Road in Darjeeling. Mr. Rai became the first local owner of Darjeeling Tea Industry. Later on his son Mr. Bhavajit Rai sold the Estate to Mr. Finlay.

The garden elevation is ranging between 3500 to 6000 feet and the total area is 427 hectares. Area under tea is 227 hectares. Phuguri has a worker strength of over 620 workers.

The garden produces about 125 tons of fine Organic Darjeeling teas annually.

Phuguri has the famous CLONAL bushes, Upper China, China and Assam bushes.

This region is often overcome by whimsical clouds that give rise to frequent rain showers. From this constant humidity and the unique soil character of its valley, emerges some of the worlds most celebrated PHUGURI Clonal Teas. The exquisite sweet lime green clonal taste with a touch of rose lingers long inside the mouth !!!

PHUGURI’s ‘CLONAL’ teas are famous and recognized all over world wherever Darjeeling teas are consumed.

Why Phuguri is renowned for its fine quality teas?

Phuguri produces one of the "finest clonal" teas in Darjeeling district. Young bushes flush during the month of April with juicy young leaves, the magic begins with the tender touch of the lady pluckers who pluck "two leaves and a bud" with care, attention and love. The heavenly aroma of this particular Darjeeling tea lingers for long inside the mouth. Over a span of five years, the unmatched "Tippy Clonal" has gained fame all over the world. Our decades of experience have taught us to harvest the leaf at the right stage (because even a delay of one day could hamper the tea quality) and identify the optimum time in which the best character of the bush is fully expressed. Our decades of experience have taught us to harvest the leaf at the right stage (because even a delay of one day could hamper the tea quality) and identify the optimum time in which the best character of the bush is fully expressed.

We take special care during the storage and transportation of the harvested green leaves as they are extremely tender and can easily be damaged by improper handling, bacteria and heat.We take special care during the storage and transportation of the harvested green leaves as they are extremely tender and can easily be damaged by improper handling, bacteria and heat.

A final prepack backing is also done to remove excess moisture present in the tea leaves which significantly enhances shelf life and encourages the tea flavour to mature over a period of time as in the case of fine wines.

Moreover, in order to maintain the final product as "authentic" as possible, we still use the original old machines which cost more to run but preserves the original Darjeeling character better.
